The large IKB electroacoustic ensemble of diverse orchestration led by violist Ernesto Rodrigues, where each release is characterized by an animal, here with the long-snouted seahorse in an extended improvisation recorded at CreativeFest XIII at O'Culto da Ajuda, Lisbon, 2019, building to undulating cycles of intense interaction of absolutely precise control. The level of detail is quite incredible, with 21 musicians each actively participating yet never overwhelming the overall sound; Rodrigues' conduction keeps a tight lid on what could easily becoming an uproar. Instead the band moves from moments of tight activity to near-silent calm, allowing the distinctive interactions of each player to be understood througout.

Given the unusual nature of ensemble, including traditional strings & horns, daxophone, euphonium, harmonica, marimba, 2 percussionists and 2 electronic artists, the band has a unique and unexpected sonic palette, resulting in sound that mixes modern and traditional methods. With 9 albums released thus far, IKB presents as a set of like-minded and highly compatible players, able to move synchronously through unusual terrain. That they do so in a live concert like the one presented here is truly impressive.

"He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.

His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.

The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

"After establishing his name during the Eighties as an electric bass guitarist in alternative rock bands, like the now legendary K4 Quadrado Azul, Hernani Faustino turned to avant-jazz and free improvised music and chose the double bass as his self-taught instrument. Two decades later of multiple interactions with Portuguese and international musicians, he's now considered one of the most intense and solid bassists in the Portuguese scene. The association he maintains with drummer Gabriel Ferrandini (RED trio, Nobuyasu Furuya Trio & Quintet, Rodrigo Amado Wire Quartet) has been pointed as a dynamic and powerful rhythm section. His visceral playing is well showed by the contortions of his face during a performance: he goes to the limits of pleasure and pain.

Music is his life: besides being a musician, he was one of the members of the label Clean Feed, considered one of the five more important on the planet in what regards jazz, and the Trem Azul Jazz Store, located in Lisbon. "Abdul Moimême was born in Lisbon, in 1959, moving at an early age to New Mexico and later to Dublin, Ireland. He began studying the guitar at the age of 11, studying under various private teachers, in Madrid, Spain.

"Kriton Beyer is a Greek-German musician and composer, who - as a performer and improviser - mainly works with the harmonium and the daxophone. He studied musicology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. "João Almeida (1997) is a portuguese trumpeter, improviser and composer based in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. At the age of 8 he started his musical studies in the local philharmonic band and later started studying at the National Conservatory.

Her first solo work, through this looking glass, shot by filmmaker and cinematographer Daniel Costa Neves, was released as a dvd+cd by the German label blinker - Marke für Rezentes in 2011. Her current work, IN PRAISE OF DISORDER, integrating texts by Gonçalo M. Tavares as read by Rosinda Tavares, was just released by Shhpuma, an imprint of Clean Feed Records.

Joana Sá has performed in several festivals and as part of season programs of renowned institutions both in Portugal and abroad, such as Teatro Maria Matos, Gulbenkian Foundation, CCB, Casa da Música, Culturgest, Serralves, Kunst Station Sankt Peter (DE), Studium MusikFabrik (DE), Festival Música Viva (PT), Forum Neue Musik (DE), Ring Ring Festival (SER), Festival Jazz Cerkno (SL). She is one half of the duo of Almost a Song (with Luís José Martins), with whom she recorded the album Almost a Song, in 2013, and one third of POWERTRIO (with Luís José Martins and Eduardo Raon). She collaborates frequently with visual artist Rita Sá. Highlights of the collaboration between the two include installations at Gallery of Visual Arts, 255 Canal (New York) and Siggraph Asia (Yokohama). Joana Sá has made music for films, including Tabu, by Miguel Gomes, which was nominated for best music at the 2013 Sophia awards. She has collaborated with artists and projects in a number of musical genres (Deolinda, Simão Costa, Marco Franco, Nuno Aroso, Drumming GP and Peixe, among others).

As co-coordinator (with Luís José Martins) of the music department at CENTA, Centro de Estudos de Novas Tendências Artísticas, at Vila Velha de Ródão (2007/08), she worked with the community (‘Sons do Salgueiral’, ‘Concertos Improváveis’), as well as developing personal projects (‘50 anos - Cage, Concert for piano’ e ‘POWERTRIO - ensemble residente do CENTA’). In this condition, she took part in ‘rExistir’, a project with inmates from the Instituto Prisional de Castelo Branco and accompanied artistic residencies, seminars and concerts held at CENTA.

Joana Sá has recorded for radio stations such as Deutschland Funk and SWR2, in Germany, and Antena 2, in Portugal, and has released music through blinker, Shhpuma, Creative Sources and Centa.

Between 1993 and 2000 she played bass in Pinhead Society, a band with which she performed more than a hundred shows, including concerts at the main stages at festivals such as Sudoeste, Vilar de Mouros and Paredes de Coura as well as the Coliseu dos Recreios. With Pinhead Society she shared line-ups with bands such as Sonic Youth and Morphine and recorded for Música Alternativa and Bee Keeper."

"José Miguel Batista Canada, from Machico, Madeira, Portugal, was born on May 9, 1997.

In 2008 he began his musical studies in the Banda Municipal de Machico, in Tuba.

In 2010 he joined the Basic Professional Instrumental Course in the Tuba and Euphonium class of Professor Fabien Filipe at the Conservatory - Professional School of the Arts of Madeira.

In 2011 he participated in the Classical Orchestra of Madeira.

He has participated in five consecutive years (2012-2016), at the OJ.COM Orchestra Stage, which took place in the cities of Aveiro, Braga, Lisbon, Azores and Porto.

In 2013 he joined the Professional Instrumentalist Course at the same Conservatory. That same year he participated in the International Forum of Musical Interpretation and Pedagogy, where he obtained the 1st place in the categories of soloist and chamber music (Tuba Quartet and Brass Quintet).

In 2015 he participated in the International Forum of Musical Interpretation and Pedagogy, where he obtained the 1st place in the category of soloist. In the year of 2016 participated in the program ERASMUS + "Music Without Frontiers" in the city of Lahti in Finland. He also completed the recording of a CD with works of his own of children's songs. He finished the Professional Instrumentalist Course at the Conservatory - Professional School of the Arts of Madeira, finishing with a maximum grade (20 points) in the final recital. In the same year he starts his graduation in Tuba at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa in the Tuba and Euphonium class of Professor Adélio Carneiro. He also participated in the Lisbon Film Orchestra later that year.

In 2017 he participated in the XII edition of the International Contest of Wind Instruments "Terras de La Salette", where he obtained the 2nd place. He recently reached the 1st Prize in the Prémio no Concurso Prémio Jovens Músicos, promoted by Antena 2 in the category of Tuba in solo instrumentalist, having the opportunity to play solo with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon."

"Studied painting with António Sena (Ar.Co, 1988 -1992), worked in advertising for a period of time, but nowadays works as graphic designer in corporate identity, packaging, web and audio-video production.

Started sound/music activities in 1989 when formed the VITRIOL project with Paulo Raposo, a laboratory for experimental sound actions, in a first stage with studio work followed in 1994 by live output, mainly live electronics, concrete music with a improvised or graphic score oriented approach. Uses the laptop with software written in MaxMsp, small resonant objects, microphones and piezo elements to produce a music that deals with space and its sound characteristics. Interests in "soundscape" and field recordings are a huge part of his work, for piece preparation or just for archival purposes, Always recording, events, spaces or music. "Pedro Carneiro is a Portuguese solo classical percussionist, marimba player, composer, and conductor. Pedro Carneiro is one of the very few percussion players to have made an international career as a soloist, and has established himself as one of the world's foremost solo percussionists, performing regularly throughout Europe, the Asia and the United States.

Carneiro has won several international competitions and awards, while performing regularly in festivals and venues such as the BBC Proms, Rhythm Sticks Festival, Queen Elisabeth Hall and Purcell Room in London, Sonorities Festival in Belfast, Macau International Music Festival, Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, Capital Theatre in Beijing, La Biennale di Venezia, Folles Journées (Lisbon), Schumannfest in Düsseldorf, Festival Classique au Vert in Paris, amongst others. "Born in 1984, obviously self-taught, from the very beginning interested more in sound than in technique, his way to explore and to learn was to play with more and more musicians, everyone who accept actually!

So really soon improvisation took an important part in his work.

He met Michel Massot in Liège, and did a lot of workshop in Mulhouse (Festival Meteo) with people like Okkyung Lee, Chris Corsano, Mats Gustaffson, .. and all this, and also all the meetings are still feeding his sound experiences.
