Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"[...] We start the review with the oldest recording, recorded in the past 2018, at the twelfth edition of the CreativeFest festival in Lisbon, in the well-known place of O'Culto da Ajuda. On stage, a quintet composed of: Mia Dyberg - alto saxophone, Ernesto Rodrigues - viola, Guilherme Rodrigues - cello, Johan Moir - double bass and José Oliveira - percussion. One, dramatically short improvisation - less than 27 minutes.

The idea of Rodrigues' free improvisations rests on two foundations. The narrative is made up mainly of small, sometimes broken phrases, and all participants of the performance listen very carefully, in accordance with the best deep listening patterns. The beginning of the concert, of course, meets all these standards, although from the very beginning the improvisation seems to be carried out with great verve, there are a lot of sounds in it, and the collective work of the saxophone, double bass and percussion does not allow improvisation to escape into intimate suspensions too often. The dynamics of the exhibition are derived directly from very active percussion. You can sometimes feel the scent of sensual free jazz in the blows of the brass. Also a lot of good happens with the strings of the double bass, which also often uses techniquepizzicato and arco. Artists conscientiously do their homework in the mechanics of friction and scrubbing, and they eagerly escape into the dark atmosphere of post-grave sighs and melancholy. They get the latter case after 6 minutes - a beautiful fear, equally sensual trembling, nervously suppressed compulsiveness of the moment.

The narrative twists with a juicy stream of sounds without any special twists. We have a phase of an exceptionally charming free chamber for cello and viola, with the background noise of post-jazz instruments. Soon after, more energetic surges lead the musicians to a spectacular downward slope - this is free chamber music, which seems to have no genre limitations. Shortly before the end of 20 minutes, the narrative forms into a spectacular drone that descends in a tumult of polished strings. Another flower for the sheepskin coat includes saxophone chants and a few more swaying cello phrases. There's still a lot going on in the percussion area. The very ending of the concert can be considered a slight escalation of expression."-Spontaneous Music Tribune, translated by Google

"Mia Dyberg (b, 1986) is a Danish saxophonist, improviser and composer currently residing in Berlin, Germany, where she works as a freelance musician. Performing with improv-musicians such as Clayton Thomas, Dag Magnus Narvesen, Casey Moir and Tobias Delius.

Her ability to combine sound experiments with melancholy in a unique melodic expression, makes her one of the new exciting voices on the European jazz scene. She is active project leader & co-founder of the international improvisers collective The Community.

Mia is a part of the Copenhagen jazz/improv. scene and holds a Master Diploma in Music '2015 from the Conservatory of Copenhagen. She grew up in the Swedish archipelago and her both wild and impressionistic music is often affected by grand nature. But there is also a pulse of the city.

The last couple of years she has made roots on the international scene as a leader of projects as: Mia Dyberg Trio, Dyberg 4 Ra, Kovacs & Dyberg, Christian Balvig/Mia Dyberg feat. Clayton Thomas[AU] in Germany, Sweden, Poland, and Egypt. She also participates in different ad hoc projects for example in New York, Berlin and Stockholm with musicians as Herb Robertson[US], Niklas Barnö [SE] Oscar Noriega[US] og Michael Evans[US].

"He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.

His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.

The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance.

Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music."

"Polivalent artist with conections to the Fluxus movement, José Oliveira is well known, besides music by his "mail art" creations, performance and poetry.

As an improvisor, his aproach to percussion is similar to Paul Lovens, Roger Turner, Lê Quan Ninh and Paul Lytton. He prefers a non conventional "set", where he uses instruments and objects as raw materials to create an improvised language rich in terms of timbre and textures. To this he adds sometimes inside piano manipulations and prepared guitar, in the same way as John Cage: the objects are placed on the strings or in between them in real-time performance, and not according to a previous plan.

He belonged to Sei Miguel collective between 1989 and 1996, played with Carlos Bechegas and Pedro Roxo and has a regular activity with Ernesto Rodrigues."
