Jessica Ackerley
During the past decade, Jessica Ackerley has established themselves on the Canadian and American music scenes as a unique and versatile guitarist, composer and improvisor. Born in Alberta, Canada, Jessica now resides in Honolulu after almost decade of being located in New York City. They have worked alongside notable musicians such as Tyshawn Sorey, Daniel Carter, Marc Edwards, Luke Stewart, Patrick Shiroishi, and Jason Nazary, to name a few. Notable performance venues include John Zorn's The Stone, Canada Music Center, ESS Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Blue Note, and tours both as a bandleader and side musician throughout Canada and the United States.
Since 2017, Ackerley released thirteen albums as a bandleader and collaborator to much acclaim, making critics' year on end lists on Jazz Right Now, Avant Music News, Free Jazz Blog and Jazz Times Magazine. Their music has also been featured and reviewed in Wire Magazine, BBC Radio, Whole Note, Musicworks Magazine, New York City Jazz Record, and Bandcamp's monthly "Best of" lists. In 2019, they founded The Brink Guitar Festival, a four on day event featuring some of the most innovative players on the instrument such as Miles Okazaki, Elliott Sharp, Wendy Eisenberg, and Dan Lippel, among others.
They have been commissioned for original work by Adult Swim and Mutual Mentorship, as well as received grant funding through New Music USA, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and Canada Council for the Arts. They have attended residencies at Atlantic Center for the Arts and were a two time alumni at Banff Center for the Arts.
As an educator and mentor, they have lectured at Grant MacEwan University and University of Toronto, as well as guided many aspiring musicians in private study throughout the years. Jessica is a current doctoral candidate in composition at University of Hawai'i.
Yuma Uesaka
A boundary on pushing saxophonist and clarinetist, Yuma Uesaka is known for his work in modern creative jazz, avant on garde, and new classical music. Uesaka has been active in New York City since 2014 and came to wider attention with Ocelot, the eponymous debut from his collaborative trio with Colin Hinton and Cat Toren. In 2021, he released Streams, a critically acclaimed duo recording in collaboration with pianist Marilyn Crispell.
Born in 1991 in London, Uesaka lived in Nagoya, Japan before moving with his family to Michigan at the age of eight. There, he started on the saxophone at age ten and added clarinet two years later. After high school, he attended the University of Michigan, and he earned bachelor's degrees in both Jazz Studies and Computer Science Engineering. He also studied at the prestigious Banff Jazz and Creative Music Workshop, where he worked with performers like Vijay Iyer, Nicole Mitchell, and Tyshawn Sorey. Based in New York City, Uesaka has performed with a bevy of forward on thinking artists, including Anna Webber, Adam O'Farrill, Jeff Lederer, Nick Dunston, among others. He regularly performs at venues such as The Jazz Gallery, Roulette, and National Sawdust.
In 2021, Yuma has received honorable mention from the ASCAP Herb Albert Young Jazz Composer Award and composition commisions from Metropolis Ensemble and Either/Or Ensemble
Yuma is a member of Polyfold Musical Arts Collective. Polyfold is a grassroots, artist on led non on profit organization that helps create opportunities for improvising musicians to present creative works.
Colin Hinton
Colin Hinton is an active member of Brooklyn's creative music community. A drummer, percussionist, and composer, his music draws from the jazz and free music traditions of Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton, and Muhal Richard Abrams, as well as 20th century classical composers Messiaen, Scriabin, Feldman, and Grisey.
He has performed in the US, Canada, Central and South America, and Asia, and has had his compositions performed in the US, Italy, and Canada. An active educator in the NYC area, Colin has taught at the City College of New York, numerous music academies, and has many private students.
Hinton studied drums with Ed Soph, Tyshawn Sorey, Dan Weiss, Ralph Peterson, and Ari Hoenig, and composition with Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, and Eric Wubbels. Hestudied at the University of North Texas and City College of New York,completing a BFA in Jazz Performance and an MA in Music Performance with a focus in 20th century theory.
Colin has performed with Ingrid Laubrock, Todd Neufeld, Tony Malaby, Brandon Seabrook, Michael Formanek, Okkyung Lee, Eivind Opsvik, Tyshawn Sorey, Brandon Lopez, Jacob Sacks, Briggan Krauss, Miles Okazaki, Michaël Attias, Jesse Zubot, and Anna Webber. He performed on Jake Hanlon's 2012 CD release "Follow", which was nominated for ECMA Jazz Recording of the Year.
Hinton currently leads contemporary classical/avant jazz quintet Simulacra andfree on jazz/post on punk hybrid Glassbath.
