A study of contrasts as French improvising synth player Jean-Marc Foussat joins with legendary saxophonist & bass clarinetist Sylvain Guerineau, whose work in both jazz tradition and free playing finds him a lyrical and expressive player, bringing flexibility in combination with a seemingly disparate foil in Foussat, heard in six succint dialogs of unconventional compatibility.

Recorded in Montbarrols, Loiret, Paris, France, on November 24th, 2022.
"Recorded at home in November 2022 in the Loiret, this curious little regional river which gives its name to the department whose capital is Orleans, the city where Albert Ayler, then a young unknown U.S. militiaman, officiated, here is a beautiful testimony of dialogue between two distinctive incarnations of free jazz and improvised music.
On the one hand a creator of "analog" electronic music, Jean-Marc Foussat credited here Synthi AKS, piano, toys and voice and on the other a free blower with a very beautiful timbre very inspired by the jazz tradition between Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas and a melodic sense coming from Coltrane, Sylvain Guerineau, who initiates the album with Une Belle Volee on bass clarinet while his usual instrument is the tenor saxophone.
Each firmly established in their respective very contrasting musical universes, the two improvisers complement each other through tangents and work together through the grace of their sensitivity. The recording technique is of superior quality both for the majestic timbre of Guerineau's tenor saxophone and for the dynamics and timbres of the electronics, whether it whirs, murmurs, sparkles, slides, sizzles or skids while screeching. Discreet engine music at all speeds, especially the intimate register for this beautiful recording.
Floating as if on a cloud of moving electric timbres, sustained in an arrhythmic time, the superb sound of Sylvain Guerineau vibrates, breathes and haunts the house with its warm melodic improvisations starting from a thematic form straight out of Great Black Music and from the common lexicon of African-American blowers. His ability becomes clearer and bolder over the course of the six pieces (around 6 or 7 minutes with a peak around the eleven minute mark) until Jean-Marc Foussat tries out the bastringue piano by shaking the keys.
A number of improvisation theorists (often from somewhat rigid conservatories or museological circles) scoff at such somewhat (too) hybrid enterprises. But active listening and focused on the pleasure of discovery without ready-made ideas of such a duo makes our senses and our imagination tell how much this collaboration holds up. Just as Derek Bailey had in his time recorded a duet with contemporary jazz clarinetist Tony Coe - the marriage of the carp and the rabbit, Sylvain and Jean-Marc demonstrate through practice that free improvisation does not respond to any definition, no presupposition, or any agenda, specifications etc...and that dialogue and a tangential form of interactivity are nourished not only by mutual listening, but above all by the imagination, the sensitive and the imaginary of the musicians and their listeners. An opening question.
After the first four pieces have flown suavely or with beautiful passion, the fifth, "Carpes et Grondins", asserts itself as the stormy moment of the album before the return of the precious bass clarinet in "Ange Deranged", facing the rustling sounds strange, chirps of a singular menagerie a la Foussat and a curious voice. In Carpes et Grondins, Guerineau evokes the drama and presses the harsh electronics with subtle accents and dramatic intonations where healthy anger rumbles or perhaps the anguish of the innocent in the face of delirium, by disconnecting the melodic interweaving of his phrasing without for you might as well slip up. The art of assumed imbalance. This album is also one of the finest examples of the sensitive part of Jean-Marc Foussat's work."-Fou, via Google translate
