'Lisboa Incomum welcomes musicians Ernesto Rodrigues (viola), Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello), José Oliveira (drums) and André Hencleeday (piano) for a free improvisation concert, on October 13, 2023, at 7:30 pm.

Synopsis:

"ex tempore", the Latins called the act of improvising. Out of time. But improvised music creates its own time, the inner time of each musician. The time to listen and react, to comment or remain silent. From the European drift of free-jazz and contemporary classical music came free music, eminently free music, made in the instant, in which the notion of 'instant composition' results from the articulation of what each musician is doing at each moment and in that everything counts, including the error. All references are called up and then forgotten in the improvisation, as well as the extensive exploration of each instrument, increasing its sonic possibilities and its power of abstraction. The instrument reflects the breathing of each musician, improvised music articulates all these breathings in the best possible way. And always focusing on listening to what is happening, to react wisely.

Ernesto Rodrigues (Lisbon, 29/08/1959). Portuguese violetist.

He began studying music at age 5 under the guidance of maestro Wenceslau Pinto. He attended the violin course at the National Conservatory. From 1977 onwards, he began his forays into "non-idiomatic" improvised music, as well as into all musical genres, from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.

The relationship with his instruments is focused on sound and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of violin/viola through the use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different scenarios of the Portuguese scene, free improvised music, as a collaborator or as leader of various groups.

He has an extensive record production in his own name or in collaborations. Founder of the groups Fromage Digital, Variable Geometry Orchestra, Suspensão, IKB, Diceros, String Theory, Diceros, Octopus, Lisbon String Trio and Spiegel.

In 2000 he created the record label Creative Sources Recordings with a great international reputation.

He has played at festivals in Europe, America and Asia.

Obsessed with making noises since childhood, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm is a free musician/improviser currently living in Kingston, New York. His wide range of musical interests has resulted in music studies in a variety of settings, from the Juilliard School to the gutter. An old Anthony Braxton, Pauline Oliveros, Morton Feldman, Ardyth Alton, his main projects include Stirrup, Jakal, Ballister, The Lightbox Orchestra, Survival Unit III and many other constellations that appear intermittently. Previous notable projects include Peter Brotzmann Chicago 10tet, Vandermark 5, Anthony Coleman's Selfhaters, Terminal 4 and the Valentine Trio. He has contributed cello sounds to numerous recording projects, including those by Califone, Freakwater, God-is-my-co-pilot, Simon Joyner, Smog, Super Chunk, US Maple, Wilco, Protomartyr, Ryley Walker and many others.

José Oliveira was born in Lisbon in 1959.

Active in the mail-art network between 1978 and 2000. Performance-art since 1980. Visual poetry and electrography since 1990. Since 1991, he has been researching, designing and collecting artist's books and object books.

Improvised music percussionist since 1980. Close collaboration with the best national and some foreign improvisers. Numerous concerts and recordings, most of them published by Ernesto Rodrigues' Creative Sources Recordings label.

Four books of linear poetry and visual poems published in various anthologies and magazines, national and foreign.

André Hencleeday is a performer and composer based in Lisbon.

He completed a piano course at the National Conservatory of Lisbon and later a Degree in Composition at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.

He regularly performs and records with ensembles working regularly with Ernesto Rodrigues and Ricardo Jacinto.

He was Miguel Azguime's assistant at O'Culto da Ajuda.

In the context of the exhibition Drawing Without End, by sculptor Rui Chafes, he held a closing concert with the project he shares with Pedro Coragem, a project called Candura.

He made his debut as a soloist in the play "Inferno" by Nuno da Rocha, with the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and more recently as pianist in the opera-ballet "Paraíso" by the same composer at the Centro Cultural de Belém.

He presented the "From Ruin" project in Serralves with Candura and Rui Chafes in the context of the Amplifest festival.
