Copenhagen composer Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard's long form work refers to units of compositional structure in systems of instruments, each a "bubble" that interacts and collides creating fluctuations, ruptures and tension release in an hypnotic sonic tapestry, performed by Montreal's Quatuor Bozzini on violins, viola, cellos and harmonica; mesmerizing.

"Colliding Bubbles (surface tension and release) is a composition for string quartet and harmonica quartet, meaning that Quatuor Bozzini is playing string instruments while playing harmonicas. "The title refers to different kinds of bubbly matter which are set to collide within the composition, leading to different ruptures and possible release of surface tension. The collision of bubbles unfolds partly in relation to sound, where small fluctuations appear in the encounters between harmonicas and string instruments and partly in relation to a more performative or conceptual bubble where instruments representing different systems, or bubbles, will collide; the very celebrated instruments within the classical string quartet and the perhaps more prosaic harmonica."-Niels Lyhne Lokkegaard
"Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard's Colliding Bubbles ((surface tension and release) is a string quartet AND a harmonica quartet, meaning that the members of the quartet play string instruments while at the same time playing harmonica.
The Danish newspaper Politiken wrote in their review: "The music soared as minimal distortions expanded it to be a galaxy of sound. The more carefully I listened for the tiny collisions that occurred, the wider the otherwise narrow stream of notes became."
The online magazine Seismograf underlined the effect of the combination of strings and harmonicas: "The trump card is that Løkkegaard has embedded an indeterminacy in the work, an optical illusion [...] You are constantly in doubt as to where the fine sounds come from."
Last but not least, Passive/Aggressive wrote: "As the quartet's players stretch between their droney melodic lines across instruments, genres and traditions, the question of what is it to be pushed into the established ways of music-making that comprise our world comes into focus. That night, the air fluttered with the beats of subtle timbral and harmonic incoherences that were indeed like experiencing surface tension as a kind of gentle ecstasy."
Colliding Bubbles was premiered in Hamburg 19 January, 2023."

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Niels Lyhne Lokkegaard "Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard (1979) works within an interdisciplinary artistic praxis, spanning from composition and sound art to performance, conceptual and visual art. He considers his work to be a basic research in realities and is interested in how bubble-like systems unfold themselves as human conditions. The meetings between individual bodies and different bubble-like systems are key drivers in Løkkegaards praxis and he's interested in how to escape these bubbles, and if not escape them, then how they can be warped, wrestled and renegotiated. Løkkegaard is interested in the notion of instrumentalization and what the notion of instruments can mean, control and do. Hence he often works with music instruments not only as sources of sound but also as cultural markers embedded within different systems and hierarchies. This being a driver in Løkkegaards work has led into compositions of music that can be performed by people with or without any previous musical knowledge or training - all revolving around the focus on how to soften positions, and how to create a safe environment for performing music, and dissolve shame or trauma. [...] The work of NLL has been presented at a variety of different venues and museums such as MoMA (NY - as a part of the René Magritte exhibition The Mystery of the Ordinary), York Art Gallery, Imaginary West Indies (Overgaden Copenhagen), ISCM (Vancouver), Radiophrenia (Glasgow's Centre for Contemporary Arts), CPH:DOX (Copenhagen), Roskilde Festival (DK), Harpa (Reykjavik), G((o))ng Tomorrow Festival (Copenhagen), Nordic Music Days (Norway), Akusmata (SF, 2020) and his works has been released on labels such as Topos (DK), Archive Officielle (CA) and Important Records (US). NLL is associate professor at RMC in Copenhagen, and has given lectures at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), Simon Fraser University (Vancouver), The Royal Danish Academy of Music, Artistic Research Forum (N), Goldsmiths University of London a.o.p. NLL has been awarded by the Danish Art Foundation, Danish Music Award (DMA), The Sonning Foundation, Prix Ars Electronica - Honorary Mention and has twice received the Danish Ministry of Culture's stipend for artistic research. Niels Lyhne Løkkegaard is based in Copenhagen, and was educated from the RMC and the School of Architecture at The Royal Danish Academy of Art." ^ Hide Bio for Niels Lyhne Lokkegaard • Show Bio for Alissa Cheung " "... classical music without pretence... He is well known for innovative interpretations of Bach and John Cage, and is sought after by composers worldwide as an inspiration for new repertoire. His diverse collaborators range from the Wandelweiser collective to Montréal's Musique Actuelle community, and from emerging experimentalists to today's most revered composers. For over a decade, Merkel's unusual sound has fused with that of the Quatuor Bozzini, considered one of the world's leading string quartets. Together they have mentored an entire generation of creators through the Composer's Kitchen; have released numerous critically acclaimed albums on their collection qb label; undertake multiple tours annually to be featured at festivals worldwide; and maintain a profound impact on the music scene across Canada and Europe in particular. They nourish Montréal audiences with unusual self-produced events that bridge worlds and cross boundaries of style, generation and culture. Following an early career in Europe, where he contributed to the continent's leading ensembles, Merkel has made Montréal his home since 2000. He supports and advocates for new music in Québec and in Canada, and is regularly sought after as speaker, curator and adviser. His presence is felt in academia as well, through articles written for the Revue Circuit, and through his teaching at Concordia University.
