By turns light-as-a-feather, and heavy and prickly as a bucket of rusty nails, the music is of contradiction and ambiguity. Leaps into '90s HatHut pastiche are followed by truckers-in-space-engine-rumbles; slow-crawls-from-the-swap of irony-free 'bells'n'smells' sound art followed by turns-turns-turns-on-a-dime mutant Free Funk. Here be dragons. "What is absolutely inspiring with improvised or semi-improvised musics, is that you may be aware of the sounds the players have produced in the past, but you can never easily guess what this new interaction will bring. Probably this is where this great divide between many rock and pop music's fans, who expect the "best" and most technically perfect version of same pieces, while the much smaller audience of improvised musics is happy to be puzzled by what will come next.

This is certainly the case when it comes to the trio of Han-earl Park in electric guitar and electronics, Camila Nebbia on the saxophone and Yorgos Dimitriadis on the drums. Their music never ceases to create new questions; their audio palette broadens with every new listen. Park's use of — in extended passages throughout this recording — electronics creates atmospheres that tend to overpass the more natural and organic sounds coming from acoustic instruments, the drums and the sax this time. Within this electronic sound field, Nebbia and Dimitriadis never fail to join and create a parallel, more jazzy (but what is jazz, anyway, nowadays) audio world.

Once the guitar joins in the fragmental, percussion nature (from the Topography of the Lungs "tradition") of it, makes Park a decisive addition to Dimitriadis playing, whose polyrhythmic, emotional give and take approach, creates small snippets of percussion sounds. Nebbia's sax never tries to saturate the others (as such an instrument can do) but, willingly, follows and goes along in a -sometimes threefold, other times a duo- dialogue between the players.

Short, low energy passages from the sax are followed by energetic playing on the drums, while Park is taking advantage on the ambivalent nature of his amplified instrument to create, all of them together, a sound world that incorporates, at the same time, the electronic nature of the guitar with the more fluid and down to earth sounds of the sax and the drums. "Improviser, guitarist and constructor Han-earl Park (박한얼) has been crossing borders and performing fuzzily idiomatic, on occasion experimental, always traditional, open improvised musics for twenty years. He has performed in clubs, theaters, art galleries, concert halls, and (ad-hoc) alternative spaces across Europe, Korea and the USA.

Park engages a cyborg virtuosity in which mind, body and artifact collide noisily. He is fascinated by the ways in which improvisation can complicate and amplify social relations, identities and agencies, and he is driven by the revolutionary potential of real-time interactive performance in which tradition and practice become playfully problematic.

He is the mastermind behind the ensembles Eris 136199 with Catherine Sikora and Nick Didkovsky; Sirene 1009 with Dominic Lash, Mark Sanders and Caroline Pugh; and Mathilde 253 with Charles Hayward and Ian Smith; and has a duo with Richard Barrett. Park is the constructor of the machine improviser io 0.0.1 beta++, and instigator of Metis 9, a playbook of improvisative tactics. He has performed with Wadada Leo Smith, Paul Dunmall, Evan Parker, Lol Coxhill, Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen, Gino Robair, Tim Perkis, Ingrid Laubrock, Andrew Drury, Pat Thomas and Franziska Schroeder. He has toured as part of Josh Sinton's European trio, and as guest artist with Gargantius Effect (Murray Campbell and Randy McKean); guested in performances by the Mark Hanslip/Dominic Lash/Phillip Marks Trio, and Swim This (Nick Didkovsky, Gerry Hemingway and Michael Lytle); performed as part of large ensembles led by Wadada Leo Smith, Evan Parker and Pauline Oliveros; and participated in improvisative meetings with Gerald Cleaver, Andrea Parkins, Tom Rainey, Mike Pride, Anna Webber and Jack Wright. He has studied with improviser-composers Wadada Leo Smith, Richard Barrett, Joel Ryan, Mark Trayle, Chick Lyall and David Rosenboom, composers Clarence Barlow and Marina Adamia, and interactive media artist Sara Roberts.

His ensembles have appeared at festivals including Jazz em Agosto (Lisbon), Freedom of the City (London), Brilliant Corners (Belfast), ISIM (New York), dialogues festival (Edinburgh) and Sonic Acts (Amsterdam); and he has collaborated in projects featured at festivals including Sonorities (Belfast) and CEAIT (Los Angeles). In addition to numerous releases on his own label, his recordings have been released by labels including SLAM Productions, Creative Sources and DUNS Limited Edition. He has performed live on Resonance FM (London), Drift Radio (Scotland), and KVMR 89.5 FM (Nevada County), interviewed on RTÉ Morning Ireland and RTÉ Nova (Ireland), and his recordings have been broadcast around the world.

Park taught improvisation at University College Cork (2006-2011, 2017), and founded and curated Stet Lab (2007-2011), a space for improvised music in Cork. He is a recipient of grants from the Arts Council of Ireland (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2016), Music Network (2009 and 2010) and Culture Ireland (2015), and of the Ahmanson Foundation Scholarship (1999) and the CalArts Scholarship (1999 and 1999-2000)."

"Yorgos Dimitriadis is a Berlin based drummer active in the realms of improvised music and contemporary jazz.

After having studied drums at the New Conservatory Thessaloniki, Greece, Dimitriadis moved to Boston, U.S.A. to study with Alan Dawson and Bob Moses. After returning to Europe, in 1994 he was offered a two-year residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris from the Greek Ministry of Culture. For the next twelve years Dimitriadis was an active member of the Paris jazz and improvised music scene, playing locally as well as participating in festivals world wide.

Since 2006 he works and lives in Berlin, connecting with the international improvisers scene and participating in different groups and projects: from solo performances to appearances with the 25 piece orchestra BerIO. Dimitriadis is a founding member of among others: GRIX, GLUE and FABRIC trios.

"Camila Nebbia is a saxophone player, composer, improviser, multidisciplinary artist curator and educator from Buenos Aires, Argentina based in Berlin, Germany. Her artistic practice reflects the relationship between composition, free improvised music, film and mixed media creations, where memory and identity are some of the main resonances of her work. Her visual work includes super 8 film, archives, destroyed archives, expanded cinema & digital video. Co-creator and curator of the collective interdisciplinary group and improvised music series "La Jaula se ha vuelto pájaro y se ha volado", the concert series "Guillotina Fest" and creator and curator of the streaming concert series called "The warmth of proximity" for womxn, transgender & non binary experimental musicians presented at the Experimental Sound Studio of Chicago. Co-founder of the collective and independent record label based in Portugal "Habitable Records".
