"The father-son duo of Ernesto and Guilherme Rodrigues may be some of the most prolific improvisers out there, which is saying something. Their seemingly never-ending output provides a real-time document of a living, breathing, ever-changing improvisational practice. With This Full Mouth, the duo is joined by percussionist Ben Bennett, known for his work with luminaries such as Michael Foster and Jack Wright. Bennett's playing represents extended technique for percussion taken to perhaps its most logical extreme. His drum set is completely deconstructed, with drum heads placed on the floor and a variety of objects utilized to create wild and unexpected sonorities.
On This Full Mouth, one can hear the fruits of the Rodrigues' decades of experience improvising together. Bennett's percussion alchemy is an important x-factor in pushing their playing into unknown territory. On "Break/Even," Bennett plays as if he is shooting sparks out of his drumkit, and the Rodrigues' strings interplay at a delirious pace until the music slows to a creeping, wavering drone. Bennett's extended technique takes center stage on "Changed Blood," and is perhaps as close to Evan Parker's saxophone playing as percussion can get. The trio chirps away frenetically, conjuring a woodchipper of sound. Bennett's wobbly percussion technique turns to a death rattle, and Ernesto's droning cello provides the perfect backdrop for Guilherme's scratchy viola. • Show Bio for Guilherme Rodrigues "Was born 1988 in Lisboa, Portugal and started playing cello and trumpet at Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa at the age of 7. In 1999 joined Conservatório Nacional de Música de Lisboa to study classical and music theory and in the current year recorded his first album - Multiples - with Ernesto Rodrigues and José Oliveira out on Creative Sources Recordings. Apart from work in music ensembles ranging for contemporary classical to free improvisation, also works with live music poetry, theatre and film-music. After lengthy residency in Lisboa, (1988-2016) moved to Berlin and has been active as composer and improviser in the scene. His interest in jazz moved steadily towards the more avant-guarde, then to free jazz, and onward into the world of free-improv. His current music stems mainly from various forms of free-improv: maximalist, reduced, noise, etc. A desire to get the most varied and visceral array of sounds from the simplest instruments has led to an ongoing process of distilling the drumset to its essential sound-maker, the vibrating membrane. Using extended techniques involving breath and friction, as well as the time-honored tradition of hitting things with sticks, he plays an evolving pile of frame drums, pre-tuned drum heads, metal things, tubes, and other objects that can be combined and recombined to get a variety of sounds during a performance. This set-up lends itself greatly towards being crammed in a backpack, strapped to a bike, dragged along the ground, or thrown down the stairs, generally without physical or psycological damage. His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music. The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements. Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning. Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups. Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance.
