"Reut Regev is a boundary-crossing composer-trombonist born in Israel, living and active in New York City and its metroplex since 1998, noted for four previous albums with drummer and co-leader Igal Foni (her husband). Three of these albums feature the quartet R*time, the last two co-starring electric guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly, all loaded with spiky, funky, free-wheeling originals, performed with a bang.
Meeting Hammond after a concert in Austria, Regev and Foni were delighted to discover the man whose oeuvre they had long admired was equally enamored of their sound and attitude. Correspondence led to It's Now: Rtime Plays Doug Hammond*, a unique collaboration setting the eminence's mature reflections on life, love, and music with the energy to render them timeless.
Doug Hammond is a veteran American composer, drummer, percussionist, bandleader, singer-songwriter, essayist, and educator who is not nearly as well known in the U.S. as his music warrants. That may be largely because he's been based in Linz, Austria, since 1989 as a professor at Bruckner University, making only periodic visits back to his native Detroit.
Hammond's sixty-year career, begun with bluesman Earl Hooker and the R&B duo Sam and Dave, comprises more than a dozen albums under his own leadership. Starting with Reflections in the Sea of Nurnen from 1975, on which he played melodica and ARP synthesizer as well as drumming, crooning, and directing an octet, his work has been defined by independence, originality, fundamental tunefulness, and a spirit of inquiry.
Those Reflections and his subsequent releases include an anthology spotlighting hometown colleagues and first recordings of singer Angela Bofill (Doug Hammond Special), Steve Coleman's nascent M-Base (Spaces), through-compositions for flute, piano, and cello (Pictures and Hues), trios with trumpet and bass (May Be Blue and Singing Smiles), an ambitious, eponymous (Tentette), and live solo 'griot' shows (Be You).
He's had professional associations with Smokey Robinson, Sonny Rollins, and Charles Mingus (who recorded "Moves," heard here with lyrics, as an album title track), among others. Musicians abroad regard him as a beacon."-Howard Mandel, from the liner notes
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Reut Regev "Israeli born and raised trombonist Reut Regev has been out in the New York scene creating and exploring music for over 20 years. Reut enjoys playing with some of the most influential experimental composers, New York style bands blending styles and cultures, and traditional sounds as well. Reut's typical year includes some free improvisation, contemporary compositions, blues, klezmer, latin music, straight ahead jazz, and everything in between. She has recorded and toured with Anthony Braxton, Butch Morris, Elliott Sharp, Burton Greene, Hazmat Modine, Metropolitan Klezmer, Joe Battan, and many more. Reut's main project as a band leader and composer, for the last decade, is the band that she co-leads with her husband, drummer Igal Foni: "Reut Regev's R*time". R*time features mostly original compositions by Reut and Igal, and encourages soulful musical explorations by the band members. The personnel includes legendary free funk guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly, as well as master bassist Mark Peterson. Also some wonderful paR*timers including renowned Tubist Jon Sass, and internationally acclaimed bass players Robert Jukic and Andrea Castelli. Since R*time's first release in 2009, "This is R*time", the group has been touring Europe extensively. Following R*time's 2012 Enja release, "exploRing the vibe", the most recent release, "Keep Winning" was released on Enja records earlier this year. At the same time as holding a successful and exciting musical career, Reut has been building her music education studio - Notes And Beyond LLC. Through Notes And Beyond, Igal and Reut offer music workshops for various ages and levels, as well as private lessons in NJ and beyond." ^ Hide Bio for Reut Regev • Show Bio for Igal Foni Igal Foni is a New Yorker jazz drummer, Married to trombonist Reut Regev. He is a member of Adam Lane's Full Throttle Orchestra, Avram Fefer Quartet, Avram Fefer Trio, and Reut Regev's R*Time. ^ Hide Bio for Igal Foni • Show Bio for Jean-Paul Bourelly "Jean-Paul Bourelly is an innovative and experimental guitarist, composer, and producer who excels at blending and bending various musical styles into a cohesive form. His solid and often penetrating guitar sound is informed by his Haitian and urban blues roots growing up on Chicago's south side. Early highlights include appearing on the album "Amandla" by Miles Davis as well as being included in the all-star band of Coltrane alumni at the age of 25 with Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Pharaoh Sanders. He worked through a wide array of different genres, from hip-hop with BDP's master DJ D-Nice to more progressive direction working with colleagues such as Elliott Sharp, Dennis Chambers, TM Stevens, Joe Bowie's Defunkt, Cindy Blackman, and produced albums for Cassandra Wilson. He has led over 20 recordings as a guitarist, including Truth to Power, Stone Raiders with longtime associate bassist Darryl Jones, and Boom Bop featuring Archie Shepp and the late great griot Abdourahmane Diop. His work continues to lead him in a variety of areas including reworking the harmonics of the blues and a quest to formulate new material inspired by imaginations on dream states and groovy otherness. His label and production studio JPGotMangos serves as a creative outlet for his most progressive projects and collaborations including his critically acclaimed 2022 release of "Masters of Mud" (Shape Shifting) with rapper Sub Z for the "Black Lives - from Generation to Generation" project, the Hips Project - Sound and Motion in the Other-Sphere, as well as the upcoming Il & Wah album release with electronic musician Infinite Livez. Theatre and Curatorial works Jean-Paul composed stage music for Penthesilea at the Schaubühne (directed by Luk Perceval) and Lauf zum Meer at the Volksbühne Berlin (directed by Torsten Lensing). He founded the Backroom Project at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (1999-2004), was the musical curator for the Black Atlantic project in 2004, and brought the musical library Spontaneous Situation to life at the Werkstatt der Kulturen. He is also the Main Jury member of the German Jazz Prize for the years 2022 and 2023." ^ Hide Bio for Jean-Paul Bourelly • Show Bio for Eric Revis "One of the most talented and accomplished musicians of his generation, Grammy Award-winning bassist and composer Eric Revis has, over the past 15 years, become an important voice in jazz. Branford Marsalis states, "Eric's sound is the sound of doom; big, thick, percussive." Scores of musicians across various disciplines agree. Revis has performed and recorded with Betty Carter, Peter Brotzmann, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Steve Coleman, Ralph Peterson, Lionel Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Andrew Cyrille, and Tarbaby (the experimental trio he tri-leads with Orrin Evans and Nasheet Waits). Manning the bass chair with Branford Marsalis' powerfully flexible quartet since 1997, Revis has also recorded four brilliant albums as a leader. 2004's Tales of the Stuttering Mime and 2009's Laughter's Necklace of Tears have both revealed his startling range as a musician and composer. Informed by his past but not tethered to it, a glimpse into the musical trajectory of this artist is indelibly clear on his latest release Parallax (Clean Feed ) and the soon to be released City of Asylum (Clean Feed). "Tales of the Stuttering Mime was an amalgam of songs I'd been composing for quite some time," Revis explains. "Being that there were a lot of different influences at play, it required that I use various band configurations on almost every tune, which was great in that I had a very real connection to all of the musicians involved." With Laughter's Necklace of Tears the same conceptual construct was in place in terms of the confluence of musical influences, but the goal was to present it in a more cohesive fashion in terms of having one group navigate the songs for the record as opposed to five or six". Conceptually improvisational and thematically broad, Parallax (Clean Feed) is timeless and borderless. The albums' approach is one of inclusion, extrapolation and exploration. Joined by Jason Moran, Ken Vandermark and Nasheet Waits, it is a true document of Revis' growth as a composer, bassist and sounding board. As on previous recordings, Revis' playing is personal and distinctive: his tone deep and woody, his execution, agile, melodic and clear. A musical polyglot, Revis is comfortable in any setting, any direction. His skills as a band leader and composer are equally profound and inspiring." ^ Hide Bio for Eric Revis • Show Bio for Doug Hammond "Doug Hammond: Composer, writer, percussionist, singer, producer, coordinator Composer/Writer In Hammond's private percussion studies with Don Templeton of the Tampa Metropolitan Symphony, it became a regular practice to be taught from Hammond's solos, duos and trios, which Mr. Templeton liked very much. This four-year study of classical music prepared him for a classical music career which he never ventured into. There were no African Americans hired for classical music in Florida in those times. Templeton said Hammond was his very best student. 1967 to 1970 were the years of much progress in the composition of both music and literature through the collective "Focus Novii." Initiated by James Blood Ulmer, Patrick LaNier, John Dana, William T. Wiggins and Doug Hammond to do presentations and productions in music, text, poetry, song and dance in dramatic context. These performances ranged from blues, jazz, R&B and spirituals to modern classical forms. It actually became a new form of theatre. His compositions have been performed by: West German Radio, South German Radio, Radio Switzerland, ORF (Austrian National Radio and TV), France National Radio, Arte, etc. Theatre and Dance in New York, Dianne McIntyre's Sounds In Motion, Pepsi Bethel's Authentic Jazz Dance Theatre, Negro Ensemble Theatre Company, Willy Praml Theatre Company/Frankfurt, Germany As Drummer/Percussionist In 1989 he began working at Bruckner University in Linz, Austria, teaching drums/composition/ensemble. He retired in 2008 and since 1989 has lived in both Detroit and Linz." ^ Hide Bio for Doug Hammond
