"Upon learning that a recording collaboration between Jason Kahn and Magda Mayas had come out, this writer started fantasizing on top-notch interplay, anticipating a classic case of "match made in heaven". Only after reading Kahn's notes did I realize that the pair have known each other for thirteen years now, thus unintentionally reinforcing my thesis about their compatibility. In Night, the respective palettes - electronics and piano with objects - interpenetrate productively through three improvised pieces, the titles forming the poetic phrase "The night was gone, the morning star was shining in the sky" found in Elie Wiesel's book bearing the same title as this album.
Kahn and Mayas's creative minds are sustained by the constant focus they maintain on the fine details of the performance. Demonstrating admirable skill, they also exhibit a fundamental understanding of the significance of mutual respect and sensible self-restraint in this area of expression. Quietness, as an integral component of such music, represents the origin of the sounds and an essential color in itself. A perceivable environment, if you will.
The conversation is multilayered but transparent, each element seamlessly integrating in the wholeness due to its inherent logic. Kahn's approach is slightly unruly in regard to the temperament of his emissions, yet he easily maintains control over the unorthodox dynamics born from the spontaneous abstractions. In a slight contrast, Mayas embodies a more reflective aspect of the interaction, revealing a comprehensive awareness - a prescience of sorts - of the intrinsic morphology of all timbres. She is cognizant of the necessity of a novel trajectory for every gesture, thereby endowing them with the requisite wisdom.
It all results in a natural consecutiveness of singular events, variations in intensity, instinctive allusions to what is otherwise indescribable. It's a mix of unpredictability and careful study of variable combinations, on which the duo sometimes dwells in intelligently minimalist fashion. In practice, if there is repetition, it serves expressly to throw some light on the innermost constituents of a sound, whether it is a metallic arpeggio, a burst of convulsive signals, a roar of resonant strings in the lowest range, a feedback that is difficult to harness.
Should a symbol be sought to represent this work, one might consider a piece of paper discovered by chance on a beach, inscribed with a series of enlightening annotations rendered partially illegible by the sun and salt that have altered the ink. The elation derived from comprehending the content in its entirety will justify the investment of time and effort. The sporadic rays of sunshine amidst the overcast of a stormy day, and the overall sense of accomplishment, will be indicative of internal growth for those whose senses are attuned, and whose aural equipment is receptive to a superlative electroacoustic patchwork."-Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes

• Show Bio for Jason Kahn " is a musician, artist and writer. He was born 1960 in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He re-located to Europe in 1990 and is currently based in Zürich. As an electronic musician, vocalist and drummer Kahn collaborates regularly with many musicians, both in improvised settings and in the context of graphical scores which he composes for specific groups. Kahn has exhibited his installations in museums, galleries, art spaces and public sites internationally. These works focus on the idea of space: the conceptual and physical juncture points, its production and dissolution, and our relation to it as a political, social and environmental medium. Kahn's other activities include sound pieces for radio, film, dance and theater. He has also designed numerous CD, LP and cassette covers. As a writer, his work has appeared in books, magazines and as liner notes to many audio publications. Performing regularly around the world, Kahn has given concerts throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and South Africa. In 2011 Kahn started the Editions imprint to publish his own recordings and writings." ^ Hide Bio for Jason Kahn • Show Bio for Magda Mayas "Magda Mayas, born 1979, is a pianist living in Berlin. Developing a vocabulary utilizing both the inside as well as the exterior parts of the piano, using preparations and objects, she explores textural, linear and fast moving sound collage. Alongside the piano, Mayas has recently been performing on a Clavinet/Pianet, an electric piano from the 60s with strings and metal chimes, where she engages with noise and more visceral sound material, equally extending the instrumental sound palette using extended techniques and devices.Mayas performs internationally solo and in collaboration with a large number of musicians and composers.Current projects are "Spill", a duo with drummer Tony Buck, a duo with Christine Abdelnour (sax) and "Great Waitress", a trio with Monika Brooks (acc) and Laura Altman (cl). She is currently undertaking Phd studies at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and investigating extended instrumental techniques, spectral music and psychoacoustics in an improvised music context. Since 2013 she has also been producing radio pieces for ABC Australia and Deutschlandradio Kultur and has released 20 CDS to date. Magda Mayas has performed and toured in Europe, the USA, Australia, Mexico and Lebanon and collaborated with many leading figures in improvisation and composers such as John Butcher, Andy Moor, Zeena Parkins, Joelle Leandre, Paul Lovens, Ikue Mori, Phill Niblock, Peter Evans, Andrea Neumann and Axel Dörner.
