Flying Luttenbachers, The: Losing the War Inside Our Heads (ugEXPLODE)

Bridging past and future, this 17th album from The Flying Luttenbachers is a punishing collection of modernist brutality, largely developed by Weasel Walter alone, yet culminating in a ferocious trio performance with Luke Polipnick and Charlie Werber captured in Chicago and NY; dense with asymmetrical riffs, death metal complexity, and avant-garde adaptations; savage!

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

Losing The War Inside Our Heads, the 17th official album by The Flying Luttenbachers, is a bleak and unrelenting collection of five new compositions, showcasing the band's signature intensity and rigorous modernist approach. Following the abstract dissonance of Terror Iridescence (2022), which marked Weasel Walter's return to Chicago after years in New York, this release stands as a transitional work, much like 2003's Systems Emerge From Complete Disorder, one of the band's most ambitious recordings.

Largely conceived and executed by Walter as a solo endeavor, the album serves as a bridge between phases, delivering tightly sculpted, high-density compositions that push the boundaries of the band's "brutal prog" aesthetic. Tracks such as "The Solution is the Problem" unleash cathartic, asymmetrical riffing, while "Id Vomit" draws on brutal death metal's jagged complexity. The album's suffocating atmosphere culminates in "Crawling 1000 Meters Across A Cold Stone Floor Towards The Forbidden", a minimalistic, doom-laden labyrinth of relentless tension.

A meticulous adaptation of Olivier Messiaen's "Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum" (movement five) adds another layer to the album's conceptual depth, with dozens of obsessive guitar overdubs replacing the original orchestral arrangement. Meanwhile, "Excruciation", the album's sole trio recording, connects directly to the band's current lineup, featuring Walter on guitar, Polipnick on bass, and Werber on drums in an electrifying long-form piece that moves between tightly orchestrated melodic unison lines and scorching free improvisation.

This trio lineup, also featured on Spectral Warrior Mythos 2, recently delivered a series of blistering live performances while touring with Melt-Banana, solidifying The Flying Luttenbachers' reputation for visceral, high-impact sonic destruction. With Werber now stepping down and James Paul Nadien taking over the drum throne, the band remains a force of relentless evolution, poised to continue its sonic onslaught throughout 2024.

Artist Biographies

"Weasel Walter (real name Walter Wyzowski) is a composer and instrumentalist who founded the band The Flying Luttenbachers in Chicago in 1991 with a current member of Cellular Chaos and Behold...The Arctopus. Over the years, The Flying Luttenbachers included noted Dylan Posa, and Michael Colligan, while creating a body of music drawing equally from no wave, death metal, gamelan, noise music, hardcore punk and modern classical. Walter moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, where he formed the latest of many Luttenbachers lineups, remaining on percussion with the addition of bassist Mike Green (Burmese), and virtuoso guitarist Ed Rodriguez (ex-Colossamite, Gorge Trio). Singular guitar phenomenon Mick Barr (Krallice, Octis, Orthrelm) joined the group in 2005. The Flying Luttenbachers ceased to operate in late 2007. On November 25, 2009, Weasel Walter announced that he was moving to New York City to join the band Behold... The Arctopus on drums and will be writing "new, more extreme material from scratch." He also formed Cellular Chaos with Marc Edwards (drummer), Admiral Grey and Ceci Moss."
